Rum Drinks for Talk Like A Pirate Day

If you haven’t heard of it yet, it sounds like a goofy joke: International Talk Like A Pirate Day! That’s because it started out as one. You should go have a look at the site I just linked and read the hilarious story behind the thing. The important point to note for our purposes here is that parties of hearties convene all over the world every September 19 for this most unlikely of celebrations, and aside from the obvious movie-pirate speech, people most often dress like a pirate at the parties.

Naturally, they also drink like pirates as well. Which brings us to today’s topic.

Now, these are no more historically accurate to the Golden Age of Piracy than all the Arr’ing and Avast’ing, but they are a lot of fun and involve rum. So let’s get to it!

No, that’s not right. How about: Now here be some proper grog for yer crew of scalliwags!

Arr, that be much improved. Carry on, mates.

Let’s not be forgetting that we already saluted Blackbeard, aye, and a fine if misnamed little drink it be. Now, in honor of the private gentlemen of fortune (that’d be the crew), a variation on the Greyhound:

Salty Dog
· highball, ice, salt rim
2 gin or vodka
fill grapefruit juice

Yer ‘umble ship’s cook suggests the gin for this one, as it blends flavors well with the juice.

Speaking of blending, if ye’ve a blender handy you can make this, individually or multiplied as a pitcher:

Azuluna
· collins, blend
2 light rum
1 blue Curacao
4 pineapple juice
1 ½ coconut cream
1 c. crushed ice
– plastic monkey

One of me own favorites is the Jamaican Fizz, which I presented for ye all some time ago. Also nice to have a blender at hand for, once the scurvy vultures catch scent of yours and you need to make several at once.

Switching to the more usual shaker, here are pleasant (and suggestive) rummy diversions:

Bluebeard’s Wench
· martini, chilled
1 ½ light rum
½ lemon juice
½ blue Curacao
½ Cointreau
– cherry

Menage a Trois
· martini, chilled
1 dark rum
1 Cointreau or triple sec
1 light cream

Quickie
· martini, chilled
1 bourbon
1 light rum
1/4 triple sec

Last, for the gentleman or lady adventurer, I give ye a brace of unusual drinks, which share a method (stirred) and an ingredient (rum), aye,  but precious little else:

Sharples
· old fashioned, ice
1 ½ dark rum
½ peppermint schnapps

Black Devil
· martini, chilled
2 light rum
½ dry vermouth
– black olive
